Be Timely – 3 Things to Keep in Mind When Interviewing

Candidate Interview1. Traffic and gridlock – Nearly everyone who lives in California views traffic at times as a seven-letter bad word. Planning ahead and managing time correctly will put yourself in position to be successful. Benjamin Franklin’s old adage of “failing to plan is planning to fail” rings true when it comes to allocating the correct amount of time to get to your interview.

2. You should respect everyone’s time including your own – Valuing your potential new employer’s time is a huge signal you’re taking the process seriously. Believe it or not, your competition might have arrived 5-10 minutes late with no reasonable excuse. Imagine you had a great interview, and the interviewer now has you as a finalist. You were impressive, and your competition was late. Guess who could be rewarded for simply being on time!

3. No second chances at first impressions – Malcolm Gladwell said, “we don’t know where our first impressions come from or precisely what they mean, so we don’t always appreciate their fragility.” Those words often result in woulda shoulda coulda after leaving an interview. What if your interview was a home run except for the fact you arrived late? Plan ahead and your career will benefit.

PS: as headhunters, we know traffic can come up, and there are things you can’t plan for. When this happens, it’s best to call your executive recruiter so they can give the company a heads up you’re running late. Companies often understand but without proper notification, one’s imagination of why you’re late will run wild.
